Shame within a social hierarchy is the most effective tool known to control human behavior ever. The powers that be are not dumb, they know full well the system they have created and the teeth it has in it, how it perpetuates itself through an inertia of suffering, and it’s persisted now for thousands of years and until humans grok what’s going on the beatings will continue as scheduled.
