Notes on Ram Dass, Wu Wei, and Revolution

Listening to some Ram Dass this morning and he reminded me of something I forgot several times over now, which is that every time we try even slightly to pull someone in a direction we want them to go there will be a resistance built to that pull. No one likes being told what to do or how to be, an authentic change happens only when someone is ready for it themselves. And I’ve felt in myself too even when I have known someone is right that if they are going to try to force me to change then I cling harder to my mistake.

I think this applies to this society as well. We can question things, suggest alternatives and live by the truth in our heart, but ultimately this way of life has to burn out this dark energy itself and pointing fingers probably isn’t helping as much as we think.

I believe actual revolution will have lots of counter intuitive movements. Like a Chinese finger trap is escaped not by pulling harder, but by lightening up. And we can look back at history throughout western civilization and see that raging at the machine has yet to free us and has a strong tendency to do the opposite of what we’re trying fix. Instead of producing more harmony it tends to create deeper divides. And I’m not suggesting allowing ourselves to be run over by those with violent inclinations, just responding to the world with greater wisdom.
